HBO Max will soon be gone as we know it, as Warner Bros. Discovery announced their plans to merge HBOMax and Discovery+ into one single service. This is set to take place in summer 2023.

The company still hasn't given a name for the new service. the head of global streaming JB Perrette mentioned that they are still researching on the brand name.

Why this happened

This all happened as the newly-merged company reported a net loss of $3.42 billion in the second quarter. Perrette said: “At the end of the day, putting all the content together was the only way we saw to make this a viable business”.

Even though there was no clear word on the naming or pricing, there was a mention of a ad-free plan, and a cheaper ad-supported plan. There may also be a free plan with ads, in order to expand the viewership further.

Cancelling the Movies

The company also announced that it will cancel two movies, which were under development for HBO Max: Batgirl and Scoob!. Not only that, the company also said that it was going to cancel The Gordita Chronicles, and putting an end to live-action kids and family altogether.

According to sources, it's likely that we will see fewer blockbuster films premiere on the new streaming service. CEO David Zaslav said the profits generated from theaters will simply be higher. "That’s why most people got in this business — to be on the big screen when the lights went out".
