Pakistan’s ace weightlifter Talha Talib won a bronze medal in a snatch event in 67 KG category, winning the first ever medal for Pakistan at the World Weightlifting Championships held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

The 22-year-old weight lifter hailing from Gujranwala, Talha, as it was seen, could not play up to his right potential as he lifted 143kg in snatch, which is much less than his best effort of 150kg, but still managed to grab the bronze. He lifted 143 KG in the first attempt, but his following attempts to lift 146kg and 147kg were unsuccessful. However, with his first attempt, he managed to win the bronze medal. The weight lifter was unable to extend his winning streak in the clean and jerk events due to technical issues, missing all three tries to lift 165kg and therefore missing out on an opportunity to win another medal.

A senior official of Pakistan Weightlifting Federation (PWLF) Amjad Amin Butt said; “He took a snatch bronze. It seems that he could not bring into application what was the best in him as it sometimes happens with a player. Had he managed his best he could have won even gold,”. He went on to say that; “Yes, he had prepared well. The two Chinese who had finished at the top two positions in the Tokyo Olympics are not featuring in the global event. I hope Talha’s effort would help him secure a place in the next year’s Commonwealth Games as in ranking his effort could be a gold in the Commonwealth region,”.

Talha shot up his twitter to thank all of his supporters; “Thank you everyone for your support. My twitter wasn't working in uzbekistan so that's why i didn't respond to your messages. Esy e support krty rhyn or Agly competition k liye duaoun mein yaaad rkhyn. InshAllah bht jald World ka gold medal b ayega. Pakistan zindabad”.

The leading weight lifter of Pakistan also earned a bronze medal last year in the same category at the Asian championship. His feats have drawn immense attention from all over Pakistan and he received huge appreciation for them. His performance during the Tokyo Olympics in which earned the fifth spot, bought him into the lime light.

Talha Talib was the first weightlifter to represent Pakistan in Olympics in 44 years that too without a formal coach and standard training facility. he young Pakistani athlete lifted 151kg in the Snatch category and was the second-best in the round. He failed his first Clean and Jerk attempt. Even though he was successful for the same weight in his next attempt and also cleared 170 kg later. His combined total of 320kg was surpassed by another athlete, Zani. Talib fell short of 2kgs for the bronze medal.

His efforts are praiseworthy to say the least, may the fortune smile on him and the future be in his favor.
