On October 28 2021, CEO Mark Zuckerberg, has renamed the parent company “Facebook Inc.” to “Meta Platforms Inc. (Meta)”, which was announced in their annual event “Facebook Connect”. They also unveiled a new logo for their company. However, the popular social-media platform will continue to be called “Facebook”.

The CEO believes that the name “Facebook” doesn’t represent all the things that they are doing but instead shifts all the focus onto their social media app. Mark Zuckerberg hopes the rebranding will allow people to see the company in a broader spectrum in which other brands such as Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, Horizon, Quest and many others could be highlighted. “Facebook is one of the most used products in the history of world…but increasingly, it just doesn’t encompass everything that we do.”

Mark Zuckerberg also hopes that in the future his company should be seen as the “metaverse” project. The CEO said,“Today we are seen as a social media company. But in our DNA, we are a company that builds technology to connect people. And the metaverse is the next frontier, just like social networking was when we got started”.

What Is Metaverse?

Metaverse is a concept that Mark Zuckerberg is trying to adopt which is also introduced by other companies such as Microsoft, Nvidia and game developers, Epic Games. It is believed to be a 3D virtual world where people can interact with one another and experience life in a completely different way. People can meet each other, work together, held meetings, work from home and even play with the help of headsets and devices.

The daughter company “Oculus VR” serves a major role in the adoption of the metaverse. The Oculus headsets allows the users to experience gaming in virtual world. “Facebook Inc.” has also been developing apps that will allow people to hold virtual business meetings. They have also announced that they will be hiring 10,000 people from European Union to work on the concept. The CEO said yesterday, “From now on, we are going to be metaverse first, not Facebook first.”.

The CEO also announced yesterday that Grand Theft Auto San Andreas will be soon coming to their new VR headset, the Oculus Quest 2. . He said, “This new version … will offer players an entirely new way to experience this iconic open world in virtual reality.”

Over the years, companies have changed their names to better reflect on the services they are providing. Such is example of Apple who changed its name from Apple Computers in 2007 as they introduced different products to the consumers throughout the years. Another example is of Google whose parent company is Alphabet Inc.

However, the rebranding of Facebook came with generally negative responses. Analysts believe that this was done after Facebook has been under criticism from the government such as leaks of data and their potential involvement in the 2016 presidential elections. This past month, former employee of Facebook, Frances Haugen, leaked thousands of documents from company and provided it to US Securities and Exchange Commission. It came to be known as “Facebook Papers” which revealed that the most of the claims made by the CEO actually contradicts what the company has been doing throughout the years.
