The setting of GTA 6 is seemingly leaked in the GTA 5 enhanced edition trailer released by PlayStation. Earlier this month, a brand-new PlayStation showcase was put on by Sony which featured Marvel's Spider-Man 2, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic Remake, Marvel's Wolverine, God of War Ragnarök, and a variety of other games coming to both PS4 and PS5. Included were GTA 5 and GTA Online, or more specifically, the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions of this game which were to no one’s surprise flooded with hate.

Sony, not betraying everyone’s expectations did not have any teaser, trailer or anything related to GTA 6, up until now the game has lived for 3 console generations and Rockstar is seemingly going to milk the game further. While there wasn’t anything related to GTA 6 in the showcase some keen eyes spotted something unusual and interesting in the trailer for the "expanded and enhanced" version of GTA 5.

In the GTA 5 trailer, at one point, there’s a vehicle with a license plate that spells out "6 is a late 90's." This has led the fans to believe that this was a hint dropped by Rockstar and game is going to be set in late 90s. If this hint turns out to be true it wouldn’t be a coincidence as this came from many reliable sources such as the popular youtuber DANNYonPC who tweeted “In the latest GTAV trailer there’s this license plate “6 is a late 90's” You think that they’re teasing GTA 6 is set in around 1998?”. Furthermore, Rockstar is well known and has a reputation for teasing its upcoming games in its current games, which actually gives this speculation for more weight.

Does the license plate on the car in the trailer actually hints at the time period Grand Theft Auto VI takes place in or if we look it at another more practical possibility that it honors the foundation of Rockstar and the start of the Grand Theft Auto series when the company was founded in 1998? The widely rumored "Project Americas" leak suggests that GTA 6 is set in the past, though that leak specifies the '70s and '80s, not the '90s. Still, the time period may have changed and this image could be our first actual clue.

If the new game is set in 1998, that would put the game's story right around the events of the original Grand Theft Auto and Grand Theft Auto 2. The license plate on the car might just be honoring the significance of the year of 1998 for Rockstar and Grand Theft Auto, 1998 was the year Rockstar was actually established in, March 1998 is also when the first game in the Grand Theft Auto series released in North America. Both GTA and Rockstar will be celebrating anniversaries in the coming months, so the license plate in a way could just be commemorating the 22nd anniversary of those things.

Personally, by doing in a depth analysis it’s more of a chance that the license plate is just honoring the company. Still, it's weird that Rockstar would add this image now which is about ten months out from its 22nd anniversary. If the license plate is, in fact, teasing some kind of future GTA 6 reveals, we still wouldn't expect an announcement anytime soon. GTA 5 is still doing amazingly well and is constantly being updated so Rockstar and the company may not have the financial need to make another game in the series and continue milking the game.

Even if it is in development, GTA 6 would almost surely be a next-generation title for PS5 and Xbox Series X in order to stand out, and next-gen exclusive games likely won't be shown off until the older gen consoles are closer to being dead next gen consoles are readily available.

We’d suggest to take these rumors with a pinch of salt and have your fingers crossed for when the official announcement is made.
