Xiaomi, the Chinese smartphone brand, has uncrowned Samsung in June 2021 and became the biggest smartphone manufacturer in the world. This is the first time ever that a Chinese brand has overtaken Samsung both in manufacturing and in volume sales. The stance Samsung has taken on this matter is that their production values suffered due to Covid-19 and they will recover eventually and take the top spot again. Despite this, the competition between these tech giants has gotten fierce, just three years ago Xiaomi overtook Samsung to become number one phone sellers in India and now they’ve become the top contenders globally.

The data on CounterPointResearch suggests that the market share of Samsung in June 2021 suffered and dropped from a whopping 21.9% to 15.7% and Xiaomi’s share elevated to new heights from 5.2% to 17.1%, making it the fastest growing smartphone brand in the month and a 26% rise from its past value. The data also shows that Apple’s share has also taken a hit and it dropped to 14.3%. Xiaomi has come a long way and ever since its establishment it has sold close to a gigantic 800 million units.

The reason for this rapid growth of Xiaomi could be directly linked to the decline of Huawei, to fill this gap Xiaomi has been making tremendous and aggressive efforts to fill the huge gap left behind by Huawei. Xiaomi has been targeting the market that was previously covered by Huawei and expanding its offices there to attract the market. First world countries such as China, Middle-East and Europe has been their focus point and the production issues of its competitors definitely worked in their favors to attain their goals, the void left by Samsung was huge; due to covid going berserk in Vietnam Samsung faced supply constraints mainly in their A series which were considered one of the best budget phones was filled by Xiaomi’s Redmi note series which provided excellent specs at extremely competitive prices.

Xiaomi’s research director speaks on how did the firm become what it is today; “Ever since the decline of Huawei commenced, Xiaomi has been making consistent and aggressive efforts to fill the gap created by this decline. The OEM has been expanding in Huawei's and HONOR's legacy markets like China, Europe, Middle East and Africa. In June, Xiaomi was further helped by China, Europe and India's recovery and Samsung's decline due to supply constraints”.

Samsung will most likely bounce back after it introduces its premium Galaxy Z Fold 3 on 11 August and brings new improvements in it’s a series, the situation in Vietnam has been improving and the experts predict that it won’t be long before Samsung is back to the top spot but this sudden drop in their ranking will make the manufacturer re work on their strategies if they want to hold to their throne.
