A team of researchers at the Korean branch of LG Electronics, working with a group at Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Europe’s largest applied research lab, on August 13 with the data traveling between Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI) and the Berlin Institute of Technology in Germany, has successfully sent data 100 meters (328 ft) over a 6G signal, setting a new distance record. This is well above the previous record of 15 (50 ft) meters, set by Samsung Only a few months ago; the data was transmitted at the rate of 775 MB per second (6.2 Gbps). The details of these tests about this next generation wireless technology by LG were posted on the company news page (LG Records 6G THz Band Milestone | LG NEWSROOM) by the company officials.

As 5g networks for cellular services have become more widespread and made their way around the globe, it was inevitable that engineers around the world in the telecommunication services would innovate and start working on the next generation 6g communications technology. The biggest and the main advantages 5g technology offers over 4g counterpart; are its lower latency and much faster data transfers however, with the deployment of 6g networks worldwide, it is expected that at its peak 6g technology would top up 5g with 50 times higher data transfer rates, and cut latency to about 10% of 5g, making conversation over video transmissions would sound much more natural. These boosts are assisted by the wider bandwidth of the frequencies in use as 6G extends beyond 100 GHz to the currently unused terahertz (THz) spectrum.

According to LG, the 6g THZ transmission struggle over long distances and power losses are experienced during reception and transmission between antennas. To evolve the communication network to 6g, the engineers had to overcome an extremely hard challenge of power amplification to generate a stable signal across the ultra-wideband frequencies, for this purpose LG, Fraunhofer HHI and Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics (IAF) developed a power amplifier and it was one of the main factors that the test was successful. This power amplifier is capable of generating stable signals at up to 15 dBm in frequency ranges between 155 and 175 GHz.

The engineers were also able to demonstrate adaptive beamforming technology which alters the signal’s direction in accordance with changes to the channel and receiver position as well as high gain antenna switching which combines output signals of multiple power amplifiers and transmits them to specific antennas. Dr. IP Park, President and CTO of LG Electronics, said: “But don’t throw away your 5G phone yet. 6G is not scheduled to be commercialized until around 2029. In the meantime, there are many more of these types of tests”.

LG says the standardization is targeted for 2025 and commercialization within next four years or so, 6g networks will be able to support much faster wireless speeds compared to previous communication technologies and reduce the latency to such values that video conferencing would practically seem like you’re talking to the other person….in person. 6g will be a key component of ambient internet of everything, this technology is aimed to improve living and business standards by making them more sensitive, adaptive, autonomous and personalized to consumers’ needs by recognizing human presence and preferences.

“The success of this test demonstrates that we are ever closer to the successful application of terahertz radio communication spectrum in the upcoming 6G era,” said Dr. I.P. Park, president and CTO of LG Electronics. “Our successful partnerships with local and global research institutions and organizations to advance the development of 6G capabilities have been very rewarding.”
