The new DJI Air 2S is an upgraded, more power-packed version of its predecessor, the DJI Mavic Air 2. While the Mavic Air 2 held up its position at the time, the industry is advancing quickly. New technology, cheaper prices and better design features are quickly taking over the fairly recent releases even by DJI.

In this article I will talk about the best features of the new Air 2S that I like, its availability and pricing in Pakistan, and whether you should buy it, wait for a newer release, or get an older model such as the Mavic Air 2.

The Best Features

DJI Air 2S is very similar to the older Mavic Air 2, which was released last year in 2020. However there are, as expected, some upgrades. To start off, DJI Air 2S has a bigger 20MP, 1-inch camera sensor. This is 4 times larger than the 1/2 inch sensor of the Mavic Air 2. This is a great improvement especially for more professional uses. Speaking of, the Air 2S can record upto 5.4K video at 30fps, and supports 10-bit D-LOG! This is by far the best feature of the Air 2S in my opinion. Before this, only the Mavic 2 Pro had 10-bit D-LOG video capabilities but it came in at roughly US$2,000.

The Air 2S also has the newer Spotlight 2.0, ActiveTrack 4.0, and Point of Interest 3.0. This means smoother, quicker and more accurate camera tracking and following. According to reviews, it agressively tries to find the subject when it loses it. Moreover, the maximum flight distance of the Air 2S is up to 18KM, while the maximum video transmission range is up to 12KM at 1080p.

The drone also has more speed. The predecessor had spees of 12 m/s (43.2 km/h) in Normal mode, while maxing out at 19 m/s (68.4 km/h) on Sport mode. Although these are pretty great, the newer Air 2S goes up to 15 m/s (54 km/h) on Normal mode and same as the Mavic Air 2, it maxes out at 19 m/s on Sport mode. So what does that mean for us really? Well, the increase of speed limit in Normal mode makes it faster when using tracking modes on Normal mode. This means it can track a subject, such as a moving car at up to 54 km/h while using obstacle avoidance system. This was harder on the older model since it couldn't go much faster without losing obstacle avoidance, which is cruicial when it comes to autonomous tracking.

Price and Availability in Pakistan

The Air 2S has entered Pakistani market, although rare. Some sellers are individuals selling on Facebook groups and on OLX, while a few online stores have listed the drone on their websites. Looking at their prices, I estimate the price of DJI Air 2S Fly More Combo to be anywhere between Rs. 215,000 and Rs. 235,000. As for full availability, the Air 2S was officially release on 15th April and should arrive in Pakistan by the end of May.

Should You Buy It?

With a growing market, newer drones are launched frequently. The best thing you can do is look for something that fits your needs and wallet! The DJI Air 2S is definitely one of the best drones you can buy. Not just that, DJI also makes their newer drones more autonomous and beginner-friendly. So if you've never flown a drone before, they've got you covered.

If your budget allows you to buy the Air 2S, then by all means, go for it. However there are other great, cheaper alternatives which might just be what you need. Some to consider are the Mavic Air 2 and the DJI Mini 2. Both of these cost lower than the Air 2S and the older, more expensive Mavic 2 Pro. Although they all have very similar features and you really can't go wrong with either.

Should you wait for their next launch? Well, you don't have to. The features Air 2S and Mavic Air 2 provide are already beyond great. You really don't need to go any higher unless you are a professional and have specific requirements for your work. With that said, you now know enough to decide on your next (or first) drone purchase!
